Chromium is a free and open-source web browser project primarily developed and maintained by Google. It serves as the foundational source code for many of the world's most popular web browsers, most notably Google Chrome. Think of it as the raw, open-source blueprint that other browsers build upon, customize, and extend.
Having set the goal of developing a fast browser, the developers decided to use open-source components and created the high-speed, high-performance V8 engine from scratch. This made Chromium one of the fastest browsers in terms of JavaScript processing at the time of its launch. To accelerate page access, technologies such as DNS prefetching and prerendering are used. In a new phase of V8’s development, the introduction of a new code compilation infrastructure—a technology called Crankshaft—delivered a massive performance boost (approximately 109%), surpassing all competing engines.
